TUES. FEB. 27, 2024 GRAND OPENING NIGHT!

CHERYL BENTYNE in LET’S MISBEHAVE! AN EVENING OF COLE PORTER with the JOSH NELSON TRIO featuring DAVE TULL.

In 1979, Cheryl became the permanent replacement for singer Laurel Masse with the Manhattan Transfer. She has won ten Grammy Awards, including awards for her arrangement of “Another Night in Tunisia” with Bobby McFerrin and for writing the song “Sassy” for the album, “The Offbeat of Avenues”. Last year marked Cheryl’s 44 th year with the group. On December 15, The Manhattan Transfer gave their final performance at Disney Hall, in celebration of their 50 th Anniversary. This program will also feature drummer and premiere jazz singer- Dave Tull, performing “Texting and Driving”, the #2 most requested new album of 2018 on SiriusXM Real Jazz, and was featured by NPR’s Susan Stamberg on Weekend Edition. The hit tune- “I Just Want To Get Paid” continues to get regular airplay many years after its release.

BILL CANTOS & FRIENDS- THE MUSIC OF A&M RECORDS…A Tribute to some of the amazing songs and artists that Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss brought our way! Featured will be TONY GUERRERO (trumpet), JOHN FERRARO (drums) and special guest- MARI FALCONE.

The music and lyrics of Bill Cantos have been recorded by artists spanning the worlds of pop, jazz, theatre, gospel and world music: Ramsey Lewis, Patti Austin, Herb Alpert, Cheryl Bentyne, Flora Purim and many others. He has written songs with Alan & Marilyn Bergman and Mari Falcone for the new Musical Chasing Mem’ries, which recently premiered at the Geffen Playhouse in LA. Mari Falcone toured as keyboardist, conductor, and/or musical director with Donna Summer, Amy Grant, Debby Boone and Vicki Carr. Additionally, Mari has  written songs with legendary lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, including Chasing Mem’ries. The Music of A&M Records show recently sold-out two nights at Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Restaurant in Los Angeles.

CALABRIA FOTI & JOHN PROULX – Two of the best interpreters of the Great American Songbookcoming together to honor their musical heroes…from Frank Sinatra to Jimmy Van Huesen. The John Proulx Trio will feature JOHN PROULX (piano) MIKE GURROLA (bass) and DEAN KOBA (drums).

Calabria Foti is a kind of musical renaissance woman. In addition to her talents as a performer, she is

also a gifted songwriter and vocal arranger. Her passion for music education has led her to coaching and

Baker. John is also a Grammy-winning composer, having co-written the tune “The Golden Years” as

conducting vocal and string ensembles of all performance levels in both jazz an classical music. An

accomplished violinist, Calabria created the jazz violin sound for Fox TV’s Lisa Simpson. John Proulx’s

piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet

recorded by Nancy Wilson for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD.

JONATHAN KARRANT- THE TONY BENNETT SONGBOOK – Paying tribute to the legendary figure in the world of jazz and popular music with stories of his legacy and the singing of his most popular songs. Jonathan’s trio will feature JOSHUA WHITE (piano), MIKE GURROLA (bass), KEVIN KANNER (drums)

Jonathan Karrant’s album- On and On hit #4 on the Billboard jazz charts and his album- LIVE hit #2 on

the iTunes Jazz charts. He has received honors throughout the country, including- the New York City

Cabaret Jazz Honors, Best Singer for the Bravo California Awards and was named one of the top 10 rising vocalists by Downbeat magazine. A voice, romantic without being cloying, warm but not forces, Jonathan carries songs with an emotional weight that reaches your soul. At the same time, he can swing with the kind of jazz suave that was patented by the great Mel Torme!

A NIGHT…TOO MARVELOUS FOR WORDS Featuring the music of JOHNNY MERCER with the ALEX FRANK TRIO featuring JORDON SPEIGAL (piano) and RYAN SHAW (drums) plus special guest vocalist- TAWANDA.

The program will include selections from Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Song Book

as well as so many great tunes including That Old Black Magic, Autumn Leaves, I’m an Old Cowhand, Ac-

Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, One for My Baby and many others. Alex Frank is the Musical Director and

bassist for Jeff Goldblum’s jazz group- The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. He has arranged or co-arranged

for the film Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood. Joining Alex and his trio will be exciting jazz-vocal

many songs on the group’s 3 albums for guest vocalists Kelly Clarkson, Fiona Apple, Gregory Porter and

Miley Cyrus. Alex spent the first ten weeks of 2023 in London as Jeff Goldblum’s on-set vocal coach

during the filming of the Wicked movies. Previously, Alex appeared on the screen playing the bass live

discovery Tawanda, co- winner of the 2021 Sarah Vaughan competition with Gabrielle Cavbassa.

BENNY BENACK III IS BACK AND ON FIRE!

Emmy-nominated and Downbeat Critics Poll winning

trumpeter and singer will make his 6 th stellar appearance at Sunset Jazz, and we know his fans

couldn’t be happier. Not only a fiery trumpet player, but also a singer with a sly, mature, naturally

expressive delivery in the post- Sinatra mold, performing standards and his own astute songs with a

thrilling sense of showmanship. Third in a generational line of Pittsburgh jazz notables, Benny follows in the footsteps of his trumpeter/bandleader grandfather, Benack, Sr. (1921-86), and his father Benny Benack, Jr., a saxophonist/clarinetist who gave the Benny his first professional experience. By age 32, Emmy-nominated Benny Benack III was a duel threat recognized by the 2022 Downbeat Critics Poll where he appeared as not only the #2 Rising Star Male Vocalist, but a top Rising Star Trumpeter as well! Benny is currently touring with an also rising star trumpet/vocalist- Bria Skonberg, in Jazz at Lincoln Center Live- Sing & Swing!
